35 of experience

According to the American Ground Water Trust, municipal wells supply more than half of the nation's drinking water, and over 15 million homes rely on a well for some or all of their water needs. But you may wonder how the water gets from the ground to the faucet.

Zavala Drilling

Zavala Drilling starts the process with a consultation with you to discuss your needs, the specifics of your property and where to locate the well. Here's an overview of the well drilling process:

1- Most wells are between 6 and 8 inches in diameter
2- Water wells typically range from 200 feet to 800 feet deep
3- A durable metal drill bit rotates to grind through layers of rock
4- A drilling fluid is pumped in to cool and lubricate the bit and carry the debris out of the pipe

5- When a water-bearing formation is struck, water flows into the hole
6- A screen may be placed in the bottom of the well to filter out debris
7- A pump is installed to force the water to the surface where it is typically stored in a tank or cistern
8- The top part of the well is lined with a plastic or steel casing
9- Grout is poured into the space between the drilled hole and the casing to prevent groundwater contamination
10- Wells are capped to prevent insects and other contaminants from entering the well
